Construction on a highway twinning project is underway at the south end of Grande Prairie, Alta.

Crews from Carmacks officially started work on the 19 kilometre highway widening project this month. The subsidiary of Vinci Construction was awarded a $92 million for the major project along Highway 40, the France-based infrastructure firm said May 25.

The scope of work includes converting the existing two-lane road into a twinned four-lane highway, building a new bridge over the Wapiti River, as well as erecting new pedestrian bridge. The project is being cost-shared by the local and provincial governments following an agreement last year.

Construction is scheduled to take three years.
